Fabrix Lancaster Celebrates 30 Years in Business!

Last Saturday, Fabrix Lancaster celebrated 30 years in business. Located at the same address where we opened in 1988, then under the ownership of founder Terri Sethi, Fabrix has gone on from strength to strength – we are proud to be the premier shop for dressmakers, quilters, crafters and sewers in the North Lancashire and South Cumbria area.

Regular visitors to Fabrix will have noticed a few changes in recent years and we’re committed to keeping our stock fresh for customers old and new while ensuring that we always carry the must-have basics.

One recent innovation, which we will be continuing to develop and improve, is the Fabrix online store. Hopefully this will allow our many customers from further afield to be able to shop with us remotely while providing a service that our local shoppers can use when time doesn’t allow for a personal visit!

We hope to see you soon, either in the shop or ‘virtually’ at our online store and we’d like to say thanks for supporting local independent traders and allowing 30 great years of Fabrix here in Lancaster.

Fabric, Fun & Fashion in Germany

Hemmers1I recently spent a couple of days in Nordhorn in northern Germany visiting Hemmers, a fabric company I haven’t bought from before.

While there I, along with a handful of other fabric shop owners from the UK, was given a tour of the art department and we saw how they print small runs of fabric designs on their digital printer. We were also shown a fabulous archive book where designs dated back to the 1800s.

Hemmers5Another department had a fabric testing facility where specialist machinery tests for fabric wear and tear, such as pilling and also a dye-fast check.

Hemmers2One afternoon I had a couple of hours to spare and so I decided to take myself to the Stadtmuseum instead of loafing in the wonderful Riverside Hotel.

This great little museum describes the rich textile history of the town. During WW2 Germany was unable to source raw cotton and so Nordhorn reinvented itself as a centre of manufacturer of viscose – now I didn’t know that before the trip!

Hemmers3I had a quick rush around the museum and I took lots of pics. What a fabulous resource for German fashion and textile students! There is a dressing-up room, a book with fabric samples from the 1950s and lots of clothing and fashion exhibits and samples on display.

Hemmers4Nino was a famous fashion brand created in Nordhorn and there are lots of examples of the label’s clothing from the 1950s through to the 1970s. Diana Rigg, who played Emma Peel in The Avengers, modeled for the brand and she features heavily in the advertising and display material of the time.

What an exciting visit. I bought plenty of lovely Autumn stock for Fabrix customers to enjoy! So, next you come in be sure to have a look at the beautiful selection from Hemmers.

Fall Into Autumn

sept8We thought we’d share the Fabrix September Catwalk window with you before the month turns into double figures!

We have chosen an autumnal theme using some lovely seasonal fabrics and colours to bring out the best of this time of year.

sept2

I love the beetle print on this asymmetric top (pictured right). It’s a cotton & elastane jersey  from John Louden (150cms wide, £13.50 metre). I’ve made this particular top a few times and it’s a Newlook pattern, 6415.

sept4

The skirt in this picture (left) s made from a Newlook pattern again, 6418. Once more, it’s got an asymmetric hemline and drapes nicely in the viscose print used. This is another John Louden fabric, available in 2 colourways (see below) and is 140cms wide/55″ and £7.99 metre.

The cardigan with the viscose skirt is knitted in a Sirdar Harrap Tweed chunky (pattern 7853). This is a new yarn from Sirdar and follows on from the success of their Harrap Tweed DK that was launched last year. Incidentally, they’ve added some lovely new colours to the DK range for this year.

sept3

You may notice that I’ve added a cheeky little piece of the beetle print jersey into the front yoke of this ponte roma dress here, it toned so well with the teal colour. Again, I’ve used a Newlook pattern, 6429. We carry a selection of ponte roma jerseys, some are pictured below, and they start at around £8.99 (150 cms/ 60″ wide).

I hope you enjoy, and you find some inspiration, from the selection we’ve made for September. I’m thinking of making some jackets and coats for the October window to show off some of our beautiful new wool blend suitings. I’ve selected the patterns already, just got to start them now!

sept5

Two colour ways in the viscose print as used on the skirt above

We do not have online sales at the moment but we are always happy for you to ring or email us and we can take a card transaction over the phone.

Pictured are some of the featured fabrics in closer detail showing some of the colour ranges available.
